WhatsApp is to impose a strict new limit with heightened scrutiny of private message apps to share videos seeks to slow the dissemination of fake news about coronavirus, the company has announced.
“WhatsApp on Tuesday said it would place new limits on the forwarding of messages. Starting today, messages that have been identified as “highly forwarded” sent through a chain of five or more people can only be now forwarded to a single person”.
The move is designed to reduce the speed with which information moves through WhatsApp, putting truth and fiction on a more even footing.
If a user receives a frequently forwarded message – one which has been forwarded more than five times – under the new curbs, they will only be able to send it on to a single chat at a time. That is one fifth the previous limit of five chats, imposed in 2019.
